Do I really need 16 GB of DDR3?

OK, so I'm having an issue with a new PC build, and the short version of the story is I think I shorted out one of my RAM slots, so now I can only use one of the two 8gb dimms I bought, and I doubt I'll be able to return the mobo, since its user error. I've been doing some research and general thinking though, and I have two questions:

1. If I'm right, and I did short the dimm slot, would I be risking anything by continuing to use a motherboard with only one working slot? Is there a risk of damage to the rest of my gear? Can a short, for lack of a better term, "spread"?

2. Do I really need 16gb of ram, or will 8gb be enough? This machine is strictly for gaming, nothing else(its essentially going to be a steambox using big picture mode). I see a lot of articles/posts talking about how 16gb is unnecessary, but most of what I've been able to find on the subject is quite old (1 year+), so I'm just wondering if that's still true.

I really appreciate any advice anyone has for me on this !

Yes, you can game just fine with only 8GB of RAM but if I were you, I would still try to get that slot tested and fixed (RMA).

What test have you done that make you think the slot is dead?

Have you tried running Memtest86 with only a stick in the problem slot?

Well my issue is that every time I have a stick of ram in the "bad" slot, the pc turns on, but I get no video, and as soon as I turn it off and remove the stick, everything boots fine. I've been told that this is due to one of three things, either bent/damaged CPU pins, a defective RAM slot on the board, or a short. I assumed that if it was a CPU pin or short, it was my fault, and I wouldn't be able to return it, and since I don't have the money to replace it myself, I was just wondering if I could run it safely in its current state till I did.

I can't really run memtest on the slot because the machine won't post with a stick in it, and I assumed that I wouldn't get anything out of running it on an empty slot.

Did you do anything weird like force the stick in backwards or shove DDR2 in the slot? That's about the only way to force a short. And usually the CPU pins are fine, more so on an AMD build due to the thicker pins. If you've never got that slot to work right there is no reason to assume its your fault. It could have been a DOA board and should be returned. Yes you'll be without the system for awhile. But I'd rather return something that didn't work right then live with it.

As for your question you'll be fine currently with 8GBs of ram. You'll probably be fine "forever" with 8GBs of ram. I think even the new consoles are rumored to come with only 8GBs so the system will be obsolete before you need more. Probably.

It can eric. Depending on which pin it is. I've heard of people running CPUs with pins removed. Some aren't used or are just grounding pins. If that one is missing/bent then the system can still be stable. Same as if its one of the memory transfer pins. That channel just won't work.
