I have a corsair cx600m which comes with one pcie 8 pin power connector but my 7870 has 2 6 pin connectors. My PSU only has 1 pcie cable which is 8 pin split 2 X 6+2.

Can I connect my GPU on that one cable or will that cause issues? and if so how can I connect it?

Thanks in advance.

You will have to connect both 6pin pcie connectors on the HD7870 NOT just one.
If you don't have more than one pcie power connector from the power supply you can use a molex to 6pin pcie converter just like this.

But again you must connect both 6pin pcie connectors on the HD7870 NOT just one!

Yes seems to me...

I know I need to plug 2 connectors into the 7870 but I only have one cable which is 8 pin power which goes into the psu which then split into 2 6pin+2pin plugs. My question is can I use an 8 pin power to Y split 6pin+2pin x 2 wire to power my gpu? thanks for the quick reply. Also my psu only has 3 peripheral ports and 1 pcie 8 pin power port along with the 24 pin and cpu power.
