So I am thinking about what new display to buy. But I am torn between a couple of things:

  • Would love something slick like this - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824005396 - But is it good for gaming? I can't find a refresh rate on it (or any other IPS monitor for that matter). Is it 3D capable? Are there IPS monitors that are 3D capable? Anything slick looking like this that would be a good monitor?

  • Surround - Getting three monitors for surround seems like a fun idea. Is it worth it? Do many games support it? My new system is going to be plenty beefy so I was considering this

Thanks all!

IPS monitors are generally 60hz refresh, because it's impractical to get the response time low enough to look okay at 120hz or 144hz. They can be passive 3d, but that's usually row-interleaved 3d, and I can tell you from personal experience that in-game text looks horrible when using row-interleaved 3d.

According to prad.de, the Asus VG248QE is a glossy panel.

Do you think the 120hz is worth it or would I prefer an IPS?

120hz vs. IPS is largely a matter of taste, unless you have special uses for the computer. If you plan to game in 3d, I can understand why you might want 120hz. Personally, I'd expect the 60hz per eye on the glasses to cause headaches much like running a high-end CRT monitor at 60hz. However, I could be wrong, because I haven't tried shutter glasses since the days of CRT monitors and Elsa Revelator glasses. My choice is higher resolution (e.g. 2560x1440) over higher refresh.

You could ask at local computer stores for a demo of 120hz 3d on one of their monitors to find out. Even if it doesn't cause headaches, a lot of games need special mods/patches to properly support stereoscopic 3d.

If you just want the 120hz for smoother play, make sure your video card is powerful enough to average well over 60 fps, or the benefits of 120hz will be minimal (for 3d, I would expect the video card to keep 2 sets of buffers, so this is less critical)

Have any recommendations on higher res monitors?

You said you wanted a glossy panel, so you can get the Auria EQ276W monitor from MicroCenter that was just reviewed here at Tom's Hardware a few days ago. Personally, I can't stand glossy, so if I was forced to buy a new monitor, I'd probably get the Dell U2713HM.
