Put together my new pc and have had some problems with it randomly shutting down. When I would try to power it back up, it would come on for 2 seconds, then shut down again.

I popped open the side panel and found this. Running 3dmark11, psu fan twitching. This is definitely not normal right?

That could be a sign of something bad, but it could also be that the power supply is JUST hovering around the point where the fan turns on.

For the more efficient power supplies, they don't turn on their fans until the heat in the PSU gets above a certain level.

Crap. As it turns out you're right. I let it run all the way through 3dmark11 and the PSU fan did finally come on after twitching for a while. It still seems odd to me.

So I still need to figure out what the heck is going on with the system shutting down on me and not letting me restart...

I actually haven't been around when it shuts off. I got the computer up and running, ran a few test on the cpu and gpu, then had to head back to work. I started downloading Skyrim from steam before I left and when I came back it was off. When I tried to power it back on it gave me the problem that I mentioned...it would come on for 2 seconds, then shut off.

I removed the CMOS battery and also used the jumper to clear it. Is it normal for the machine to boot up when the jumper goes back to the normal position?
Anyway, I'm running memtest right now. Its gone through one pass without any errors, I'm letting it keep going for a while

Yeah, that's normal.

You're running multiple instances of memtest at once, right?

Nono, I mean running multiple passes simultaneously.

(See here: http://www.techspot.com/community/topics/tutorial-how-to-use-memtest.62524/)

I mean opening the program multiple times and letting each instance run at the same time.
You should have as many copies of the program running as your CPU has physical cores.

You would be using the version that runs within windows.

If you're using the version that you boot from, then don't worry about it - it gets around the issues that the within-windows version has.

Alright, I let it run through 4 passes and called it good for now. I also booted up and ran Prime95 for 10 min and everything is fine. Max temp was 53C. I'm a little stumped I guess. I haven't had the problem recently. I did take out, and reseat the GPU to get access to the CMOS battery, so maybe it was a little off for some reason. I really don't know.

Maybe I will flash the bios with the latest firmware. I think I read something about being able to do it within windows but I can't seem to find the link now. Any thoughts on where to go for that?

That would depend entirely on what motherboard you have. :p

As for the rest of it, I wouldn't think a misseated GPU would even let the computer boot at all, but who knows.

Well who knows then...

I updated to the latest bios and haven't had the problem since I loaded windows and left for work. Maybe I'll just pop open steam and let it download a few games overnight and see if shes still going in the morning.

Sounds like a plan!
Hopefully the ghost has been exorcised for a while.
