I've been looking for a new laptop. I was drawn to the Asus K55vd but I've been put off by the cheap feeling design. Even my mother was offended by how much I could bend the lid in the shop. I'm quite a novice with computers, and to be honest I'm completely confused about what to get. It needs to fit the following criteria:

1) What is your budget? Probably around £500/$761.

2) What is the size of the notebook that you are considering? Standard 15.6 inch will do.

3) What screen resolution do you want? I'm not too bothered about brilliant resolutions.

4) Do you need a portable or desktop replacement laptop? This is very important. I need to be able to carry it on a bus to uni everyday.

5) How much battery life do you need? Preferably 5 hours of light usage, but there are plugs at uni so this is an area I can scrimp on.

6) Do you want to play games with your laptop? If so then please list the games that you want to with the settings that you want for these games. (Low,Medium or High)? Literally only The Sims 3, on medium graphics settings.

7) What other tasks do you want to do with your laptop? (Photo / Video editing, watching movies, Etc.) Just internet browsing, maybe a bit of movie watching. Nothing like photoshop or video-editing.

8) How much storage (H.D.D Capacity) do you need? Around 500gb would be fine. I'm currently suriving on about 10gb thanks to a major fluff up of my Acer Aspire 4920.

9) If you are considering specific sites to buy from, please post their links. I don't mind, as long as it's probably going to be available in the UK, so quite popular models.

10) How long do you want to keep your laptop? Ideally it would last a long time, at least 3 years. But who buys a laptop and only wants it to last a year?

11) What kind of Optical drive do you need? DVD ROM/Writer,Bluray ROM/Writer,Etc ? Just a basic drive. No blueray or anything.

12) Please tell us about the brands that you prefer to buy from them and the brands that you don't like and explain the reasons. I'm open to anything, at this point i'm desperate.

13) What country do you live in? UK

14) Please tell us any additional information if needed.
I've found plently of heavy, thick laptops that meet the criteria. I just need a thinner one. I'm willing to pay a bit more if it meets most of the criteria and is a bit thinner/lighter but it absoloutely must play games to a playable standard. This plays sims, but freezes every 3 seconds for about 5 seconds. I will be majorly annoyed if I buy another which runs it no better. And if I'm picky, brushed aluminium finishes would be awesome.
Thanks

Im going to generalize a bit here as i do not know the market in the UK, Im assuming the models are the same for Asus within the world.

I currently have a Asus K55A, modded a bit but my teacher has the stock. Stock or not, most of the K55A's seem a bit flimsy, but they are rather robust, ive dropped my laptop 3 times, once on the corner, once flat on the bottom and another on the touchpad edge, all i broke is a small clip on the corner of the screen. It plays TF2 with ease, Minecraft on Far&Max Smooth lighting(DEFAULT UNMODDED!) with 33+ FPS. I think it can do Sims, although i have not tested it. Anything with a I5 - 3210M should do on the intel side, AMD look for a A8+.

Avoid a few brands: Acer, HP(my last laptop was sent back a whole 4 times, got a new one from them than SOLD it), and any unknown brand.
Good brands: Asus, Lenovo, Clevo(Custom notebooks). Im partial to my Asus stuff, have never had a issue.
