So I want to buy an SSD for my new PC, the SSD can't be anymore than $130. Right now I am looking at whether to get the Kingston Hyperx 3k 120GB SSD or the Samsung 840 Pro 120GB SSD. I am thinking of going for the Samsung because I heard the Sandforce drivers aren't very good and have slow write speeds. If you have any other recommendation for an SSD (preferably around $120 and 120GB) please tell me ASAP!

The specs of the Kingston Hyperx 3k 120gb are

Max Sequential Read
Up to 555 MB/s
Max Sequential Write
Up to 510 MB/s

4KB Random Read
Up to 85,000 IOPS
4KB Random Write
Up to 73,000 IOPS

The specs of the Samsung 840 Pro 120gb are

Sustained Sequential Read
530 MB/s
Sustained Sequential Write
390 MB/s

4KB Random Read
Up to 97,000 IOPS
4KB Random Write
Up to 90,000 IOPS

Something I just noticed is that Kingston sort of tricks us, notice how Samsung has "sustained" speeds and Kingston has "maximum"...hee hee, anyways which would you guys go for or is there something better such as a Plextor SSD?

I normally recommend Samsung - stellar track record. If you are in the USA you can get the 840 Pro SATA 3 6Gb/s 120GB ssd for less than $135.00 when it is on sale. Crucial, Intel, and Plextor are also worth considering.

I maintain the ssd database listed in the sticky at the vey top of this forum section. Here is the link:

Scroll down to the brands and models you are interested in and follow the links to the technical reviews.

You will not notice the difference between SSd's. I have a Kingston Hyperx 3k 120gb, and it is very stable. I got it for ~$80 back in November.

The differences you're seeing between the two, going from what you are used to in a spinning drive, is a 900% improvement vs 905% improvement.

Don't stress over those minute differences in specs.

I would also recommend the Samsung just based on reliability. The 840 Pro is the fastest drive out there as well in real world applications.

Alright I will go for the Samsung, I was looking at the Vertex 4 but noticed a lot of them were out of stock and then I also heard they were going out of business (not sure if this true though).

I have spring break next week so if I could purchase my SSD now I would enjoy it a lot more, should I order it now or wait for some sale to go on for the SSDs?

They go on sale regularly. Just check the deal sites like slickdeals.net and logicbuy.com in fact the 250GB vanilla 840 is on sale right now for $140 with free shipping. It's not quite as fast as an 840 Pro but I would go with the largest drive you can afford over speed.

I read a good analogy about SSD speed saying something like "Any SSD is like 800 times faster than a hard drive. The fastest SSD is 803 times faster." Even my almost 3 year old Vertex 2 does not feel slow and allows Windows to boot in under 20 seconds.
