Hello, I've been a longtime lurker on tom's hardware, but here is a problem i cannot figure out.

Built a computer, here's the specs:

Asus m5a88-v motherboard
Gskill 8gb RAM
Seagate barracuda 2TB drive
Nvidia GTX 550

And here's my problem:

I built this last year, around march. The original WD 1TB HDD had the same problem, the HDD light would randomly stay on, sometimes for minutes, and everything was frozen. CPU usage was 0, HDD was 100% with only 1 program running, no matter what program, even notepad, would eventually cause it to freeze. Formatted and reinstalled Windows 7, still the same thing.

Got a Seagate 2TB drive, it worked fine for a whopping 6 weeks, and now the problem is back. Well, i pull the HDD from my laptop (which works fine, no hangups or anything) and the exact same symptoms happen. Plug the seagate into an external dock, hook it up to the laptop, no problems, no hanging up.

The BIOS is set to IDE, one hard drive, no optical drives or external drives.

Is there something i'm missing? maybe the controller on the motherboard is fried?
