Problem Overclocking 512MB ATI 4870 HD

Using the Catalyst Control Center, I push both the memory clock and the GPU clock settings up to their boundaries, where they still pass the program's stress test, but when I use those settings- the ones the CCC says are stable- in a game, my GPU crashes and the game freezes and crashes until VPU Recover kicks in or I have to restart my computer entirely.

Both the default overdrive settings and the custom overclocked values are as follows:

Default Overdrive GPU Clock Speed: 750 MHz
Default Overdrive Memory Clock Speed: 900 MHz

Custom Overdrive GPU Clock Speed: 850 MHz
Custom Overdrive Memory Clock Speed: 1060 MHz

I tried backing off the top custom values by 20 MHz each, even, but that doesn't help- it still crashes within seconds of starting up a game.

Am I doing something wrong, or is my GPU just not stable enough in general to overclock? I keep having to revert to the default values to keep it from crashing whenever I play games, even though it keeps telling me that everything up to those custom values is still stable. I've also followed the general smart way of doing it by increasing the values incrementally and testing it out each time- I still get crashes at pretty much anything above the default Overdrive values.

ccc stability test is not enough to make sure stability
indeed use furmark and 3dmark 11 to confirm stability

try gpu clock below 800mhz and video memory below 1000mhz
this setting may run stable (if smps is a quality one)
