can/should i use one of my older 9800 gtx+ as a physx card

Solution
No. The 680 is more than capable of handling its own Physx processes on its own in comparison to the rate in which the 9800 could deliver them. I had a similar (albeit one generation lower) setup I tried. I have a 570 gtx with an old 8800 in the closet. I found that with the 8800 running as a dedicated physx card I saw a performance decrease. I would imagine you would only start seeing a benefit if you used a 280 (more likely a 460) to handle the physx
