Hello! First post here so I'll make it quick. I am in the middle of trying to decide whether or not a 120hz+ monitor is worth the extra $100+ and it would be great if you guys could give me some insight. I've narrowed it down to 2 choices;

1. Asus VE248Q
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236154

2. Asus VG248QE
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236313

(Note: The BenQ XL2420T would be my 2nd choice if it wasn't slightly above my price range)

I have never owned a monitor with more than 60hz, but based on what I've read so far, having a really nice graphics card / processor is required in order for the 120hz+ options to be worth it. I have an Intel i7 950 (3.07GHz) and an NVIDIA Geforce GTX570. Will I be able to run most games at 100+ fps?

I have heard a lot of people say that once you make the switch to a 120hz monitor you never go back, but it just seems like kind of a lot of money only to make things appear more smooth. If I played FPS games competitively, the VG248QE would be my choice in a heartbeat, but I do not. Most of the FPS games I play are single player (like Far Cry 3 or Bioshock: Infinite) and the games that I do play with friends, (such as League of Legends and CS:GO) I play casually.

Hopefully that is enough information for you guys to give me an insightful response. I would really like to get one of these monitors ordered in the next day or so but I'm just so indecisive about things like this. Also, upgrading my computer in the next year or 2 is something that I plan on doing, if that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance for any replies. And if anyone has any alternative choices within the $150-300 price range, please feel free to share. :)

Thank you for your response. I will stay away from the 120hz monitors.

As for 60hz monitors, is the one I have picked out a prime choice? I can't seem to find any other 23-24" monitors with 5ms or less response time besides those ASUS ones (and half of them come with a really flimsy arm/stand - and I move my monitor around A LOT)

If anyone knows of another 24" with low response time, a sturdy arm/stand, and nice color/contrast quality for $200 or less, please let me know! I'll be ordering choice number one if I don't get any more responses by the end of today.

That is actually the monitor that I purchased a week or 2 ago. Picture quality was great and I loved the product. However, the arm that connects the monitor to the stand got bent really fast (due to me moving my monitor from place to place quite often - lan parties to be more specific) and it made the monitor appear tilted. Luckily I was still able to get a refund. However, from now on I will stay away from stands that look that flimsy. Thank you for the recommendation though!

Right now it is between the VE248Q that I linked in my first post, and the ASUS PB238Q (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824236292).

I like that the PB238Q has what appears to be a nice and study stand, as well as it being an eIPS monitor (I am not sure if it is worth the extra ~$30)
