GPU is the graphics card right? Why is there do much discussion about frame rates in gaming when comparing CPU?

I thought CPU is really about running the game engine and the graphics card will be responsible for the DirectX and OpenGL kinds of stuff in the game, no?

Thanks for helping me understand this.

you are correct with the GPU rendering and processing most of the info BUT the CPU needs to tell the GPU what it needs to do. everything is based off of the CPU. the CPU sends the GPU the info the GPU needs to work on. So if the CPU is slow at this point it will affect the FPS in games.

it depends on the game like in planetside 2 u need a really good cpu because most of the stuff is rendered from the cpu another example would be skyrim it makes a really big difference with the cpu
