the question i have is, with the trinity amd series is it possible to buy a cheaper, smaller graphics card to play intense games smoothly at normal or high settings? essentially would the combo of the amd and a smaller video card equate to good to excellent graphics without the big budget, the impression i've gotten, from reading on the net, is Intel chips are expensive and require a more expensive graphics card. intel chips lack the graphics of the new amd series. is that right?

Intel lacks the integrated graphics of the Amd trinity, The integrated graphics on that processor are similar to the Hd radeon 6670. So yeah it can do gaming on low-medium settings. You can also choose to add a 6670 to crossfire with the apu, for increased performance. Or put in a higher graphics card in all together. The processor price/performance doesn't mean you need to put a graphics card in of equal performance. You just want a graphics card capable of doing the things you like to do on your computer. Unfortunately if its a lot of gaming. You will have to spend money on a graphics card. So many people on a budget tend to go with the trinity for its integrated graphics, meaning they do not have to add a dedicated graphics card right away to there build.

i guess i extend the question to any amd chip as uniquename suggested. it wouldn't be extreme gaming, i would like to play 1 or 2 video games like assassin's creed or modern warfare oonce and a while without insane detail once and a while. my newbie question is what does apu stand for? my 2nd question is do amd motherboards have fewer usb 3.0 ports?

The processors Unique suggested are not apu's that are regular cpu's The only apu's are the amd a-series chips. When your buying, what it really comes down to budget and how much you have to spend. A processor like unique suggested and a dedicated graphics card will almost always be better then a APU, But it also costs more money. Like this.

Fx-6300 $130 + Radeon 7770 $120 = $250 This will be better then the A-10 5800k

But

A10-5800k with built in gpu = $130

So for people on a tight budget who want gaming capabilities the APU, is the way to go.

If you are building your computer with a hardware budget over $500 though. Typically you would try to not go with a APU

Don't forget about the E and R series APU's
