Don't know why my CPU isn't running as it used to

In the past few weeks my gaming experience in BF3 went from perfect to unacceptable. I remember that in December I was showing a friend of mine that my OC was able to run BF3 ~100fps on Low @ 1920 X 1080. Now my frame rate ir ~35 no matter what settings or resolution I use. I thought it could be the CPU because I incorrectly installed a heatsink but because it works and it's been there for a few months. (already checking them to buy a new one). Still, the temps aren't that bad. Now it's at 45 C and with load it's around 65 C. However when I start a task manager or speedfan with BF3 multiplayer open it shows to be always >80% load, sometimes even 100% when opening other programs with Bf3 on running.

The single player was alright, ~60fps on ultra
I tried playing in an empty server and the fps were about the same.
Also tried playing with BF3, MW2 and ARMA2 all running and the fps in battlefield was ~20.

I don't think it's a CPU bottleneck 'cause 3 weeks ago it was perfect.

What could be the problem?

EDIT: I wanna add that MW2 used to run at 91fps constant and now it runs ~55

Format C:\ and reinstall Windows. Make sure your drive controller is set to AHCI instead of IDE in the bios when you do the install.

Is that the only solution? I have a laptop HDD so I can move connect it to my PC and move the important stuff there. But if there's another alternative I wanna know

No.. that is poor advice.. its the kind of advice you get from support desks who cant be bothered to diagnose.. their solution to any problem is "reinstall windows"!!

I presume the heatsink issue was before you had it working fine? so you still unclear what happened to make it worse?
You should open up and clean out dust from cooler and make sure fans etc all working.. .. but if temps seem fine and CPU is not being throttled because a fan not working - I doubt its that.
Any other games slow? is it just BF3 or are all games/graphics progs slow?
If its just BF3.. may be reinstall the game.
I would suggest you reinstall the latest graphics drivers.. just to be sure.

So try some of the basic stull I mention..and if that not resolve. .come back and tell us what you tried, and if you can.. what changed around the time the problem occurred.

Good luck.
Cheers

There is a new driver in the Geforce website so I'm downloading it right now. I have to go so I'll keep in touch tomorrow

OK.. if it Gforce - they have a nice "clean install" option - go for that when you install.

The driver made no difference. I might try to reinstall Bf3 but the frame rate also dropped in COD, but that doesn't bother me, I play it like every 2 months

speaking of the "usual stuff", ran virus scan lately? also a HDD health check up would be a good idea at this point.

But that is important info.. its its not just BF3.. that suggests its is a machine level issue and not just a BF3 issue. It tells me that reinstalling BF3 will probably not make much difference.
Did you check all the fans? including the one on the graphics card? have you checked your graphics card is not overheating?
I don't think it will a HDD issue.. that should not impact fame rate..it would effect load times.. but once game loaded - you would expect it to run as normal (in general).
the scan for malware/virus is a good idea...
also - checked your voltages? just want to make sure your power supply is able to keep enough power going to your graphics card... if power supply is on the way out - you can get some very strange symptoms.
And you really sure your "incorrectly installed heatsink" issue has not come back to bite you? you just need do some careful diagnostics..
Sorry I cant give you a silver bullet answer.

I scanned my computer with AVG, apparently there was no malware and the other issues it found were solved easily.
IDK anything about voltages so I took a print screen to SpeedFan and here it is: http://i.imgur.com/7ygSN0E.png

With speedfan opened I remembered that when I had the stock heatsink the CPU usage was always ok never reaching the 100%. After installing the new one it got unstable. Going from 3% to 20% and down to 10%, and all that just with my internet browser opened. I'm thinking about buying a new heatsink but I'm not sure because I plan on getting a Steamroller 8-core when they come out.

All the fans are working neatly, now I'm gonna clean the dust

If I get a new CPU cooler, would it work better?

Have you checked to see if it was throttling?

I didn't what throttling is so I took a screen shot showing CPU Z with the computer pretty much idle(left) and under load(center). On the right is the task manager while I was on BF3 campaign. http://i.imgur.com/xw9h66a.png

EDIT: i tried doing the same while playing on a 64-player server and the core speed is never constant. It's going from 3.5Ghz to 0.8Ghz and it keeps going from one to the other.

OK so today I installed a card reader in the 3.5in bay and cleaned all the dust inside the computer and decided to check the coller and the CPU. What happened when I installed it was that I forgot to place the ring that goes before the nuts in the back of the motherboard and the nuts won't come out. The cooler is a little loose and it's not cooling well enough. So I took little pieces of cardboad and placed them where the rings should be. Now the temps are more stable but the CPU usage is still kinda crazy.

This is how it looks now: http://i.imgur.com/VG1cAjF.jpg

I'm going to buy a cheap cooler as soon as I can and see how I can cut those bolts and place the new heatsink. Thank you all for your time and help!

Yeiks.. that looks to be a bit of a bodge...
If its lose, incorrectly seated, no wonder you getting strange results.
As you say - you really do need to get that fixed.. by the sound of it - its the root of your problems, so fix it and they should go away.

I finally installed a new Hyper 212 EVO and everything is stable. Temperatures are around 20 degrees C lower than before. Really happy now and considering doing some OC soon!
