Does this sound like a dying/bad hard drive?

So yesterday i was playing a game called apb:r and it would freeze up every 15-20 minutes sometimes even lock up the whole computer and i would have to restart it. This was just after a patch so i figured it was a problem with the game, so i looked on the forum but i didn't see any new posts about crashing problems. So i decided to re-install the game to see if that would help. While downloading the game with steam my computer locked up and the cpu fan was maxing out. So i thought i might have a virus or a problem with windows, i didn't have much installed so i figured i would just do a factory reset. it went smooth but an acer has this add on install thing before you can use the computer and during that i got a blue screen. restarted it and it didn't come back. Now it seems everything is super slow, things like control panel will say Failed to load/open, and if i try to download and install something the computer freezes and sometimes it won't even shut off. I was lucky able to create a factory disc at the last minute made 4 cd's and it seemed to work fine. Tho at the last disc when i went to use the pc it wouldn't show an image and the cpu fan was higher than idle, the disc drive was open so i know it finished and haven't touched the computer since.

Also what would be a good replacement for it, it was a WD Green 1tb and the pc is only about 2 years old, so something can't be right.

I was thinking about the WD black 500gb(WD5003AZEX) would that be an ok upgrade?

use a hard disk test tool.. if you know the manufacturer of your current drive.. they will have a test tool which will run from a CD.. bypassing your OS and test your HDD... if that says its bad.. you know where you are.. and if it has a 3 year warranty - you may get it replaced free.

But if it bad.. and you need a new drive.. if its your main machine drive, and can tolerate the 500GB instead of 1TB.. go for the WD black.. its much faster than the green. The green is fine for a second data drive.. but its slow in comparison with a black.. and for your main system drive. speed is the priority (IMHO)
