My computer is set up to have the 120 gb ssd be the boot drive and a 500gb hdd be the storage drive. My hard drive died today and deleted my desktop folder which it was stored in. As of now the desktop is no longer responding and the start menu and taskbar are not functioning properly. Is there any way I can setup a new desktop on my still functioning ssd.

Any help is much appreciated

Im not quite clear...
Are you saying,.. the 500GB HDD died and now that is messing up your Desktop/start/taskbar.. even though your SSD (which contains your Operating system) is perfectly OK?

If that is the case - I suspect that you had lots of links to the HDd (i.e progs installed on the HDD etc) and so now that the HDD is dead.. its confusing the OS.
Have you removed the old HDD? if it still in place and not completely dead.. it can be making things much worse.. so if its dead.. remove it completely...

I suspect I have misunderstood.. so before I go off on a wild goose chase.. please confirm

Yes it was the hdd that died, but I had Win 7 installed on the SSD. My desktop and such though were tied to the hdd because it was 6 times the size of the ssd. I have unplugged the dead hdd but the problem still persists. I get an error when booting to the desktop saying that the desktop cant be found but i still see my regular background and can still access the search programs function in the start menu to find Mozilla and get on the internet. My taskbar and start menu will no longer hold icons either.

Thank you for the quick reply

If you have key files spread across 2 hard drives.. and one of the drives fail.. you pretty much have a corrupt OS.
If its just your desktop that's gone.. perhaps you can create new account and that will create a new desktop for that account etc and you can work it trough that way.
If it was me.. I would prob do a reinstall of the OS over the top of the current install.. and without the extra HDD it would be forced to put all key files back on the SSD and fix it that way.. But you may not be comfortable with such an endeavour.
Id go for the new account and see where that gets you..
