Hello

ive have just installed a new motherboard ( GA Z77x UD5H) and im having strange booting issue.

I can only boot into windows if i put the boot order in the bios to Windows Boot Manager then my optical drive and then my HDD
If i change it and have my HDD as the first Boot option it simply tells me that it cannot boot.
Once i use the windows boot manager it goes straight into my windows 7 install and all seems well.
However i dont understand why i can not boot from my drive?

Just a few details that i think may be important. Once i had installed my new motherboard i was not able to get into windows at all ( blue screen after POST) and i had to do a fresh install.

As soon as i used my windows cd to start the new install, i first had to delete both partitions because it told me this: Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table. On efi systems, windows can only be installed to GPT disks.

So i deleted both partitions and then installed windows without a problem.

Also... for some reason my bios had the boot order to start with my OPTICAL cd drive and then my Disk.
What i have already tried

I did try to connect my HDD to sata 2 ( controlled by Intel Chipset) since i initially had my disk connected to sata 3 ( controlled my Marvell Chipset) but that didnt change anything.

I also tried to use my windows cd to repair windows, but it told me that my windows cd is not compatible with my current version. Even though it is the exact cd i used to install windows...

So , firstly why is this happening?
Is it a problem if i boot from windows boot manager instead of my disk, and if so how do i fix this? Do i have to reinstall windows all over again? And if so, how will i stop it from doing the same thing again?

As far as side effects, the only thing i can really see is that my diskeeper can not see my disk health since smart doesnt seem to be enabled ( it worked fine with my old motherboard.

I hope i explained myself well enough!

Here is a quick rundown of my system just incase it matters

Motherboard: Ga Z77X UD5H (new)
Memory: Corsair vengeance 8gb (new)
HDD : WD500BHTZ velociraptor (old)

any input on this is greatly appreciated since i honestly have no idea whatsoever why this is happening and wheter this is an actual problem or not. Thank you very much in advance!

It shouldn't be a problem to boot from the boot manager, so you're OK as is. You shouldn't have any problems operating like that. As to what happened, you moved into a new board which features a UEFI BIOS; by default it wants to boot in EFI Mode (which uses a GPT partition instead of the older MBR used by conventional BIOS - that's why you had to re-install windows and got that message in Windows setup)

Thank you for the speedy reply! Good, im very glad that i can just continue with this setup then, i was not looking forward to reinstalling windows yet again. And i understand the new bios system (asfar as someone like me could understand it ) but i still dont understand why it decided to create this windows boot manager thing as as a bootable drive instead of just using my HDD as my old motherboard had done?

Also , since SMART seems to be disabled now ( and i can not seem to find any way to enable it in this new bios, will my pc still let me know if there is a problem with my disk in future? Diskeeper ir no longer able to check the disk health and i just want to make sure ill be able to know if something is wrong with my disk before it just dies.

bump, would really love to understand why this happened in the first place , in case i decide to reinstall windows after all so any input would be very helpful :) ty

Well, it shouldn't be too problematic to re-install the same way you have it now. When you boot from the disk on this new model board it looks like it defaults to UEFI (the mode you're in now) and Windows Setup will therefore automatically create a GPT partition.

The original installation could have BSOD'ed because it had drivers incompatible with the new board. Was this drive transferred from a different system? That could lead to driver problems, particularly if you were moving from Intel to AMD or vice versa.

I know this is old, but I'm dealing with the same thing right now and would like some information. I completely clean wiped my ssd from a usb iso in the bios, and clean installed Windows 8. I am still only able to use the Windows Boot Manager as a boot option, where as up until this, I was able to use my SSD.

It bugs me because my boot is slightly slower now, as I see a spinning circle at the splash screen.

Motherboard is an Asrock Z77 Extreme4.

I think what you need to do is in the bios Under boot mode at least on my motherboard z77x ud5h I have 3 options uefi, uefi with legacy support or just leagacy support I think the one that you want to choose is uefi with legacy support and after doing that and reinstalling windows you should see all of your drives Listed in the bios again and should be able to choose the ssd or whichever is your master.

Hope that helps.
