If I do a clean install on a HDD, (XP PRO), can I then copy a different HDD contents to it? The source is a laptop also running XP Pro, while the destination is a HDD in a desktop. I've already tried cloning the HDD, but it will not boot on the desktop without a BSOD. I've tried running the Repair Console from an XP installation disk, but it, too, results in a BSOD. I've tried setup in Safe Mode but setup won't run in Safe Mode, with or without network. The destination HDD is 1TB, while the source is 232GB and it has irreplaceable programs and files, hence my need to copy everything, not merely some files. Any suggestions will be welcome. By the way, both HDDs are WD and I used Acronis to do the cloning.

You've already discovered that the systems are too different for cloning and copying to work. You have two options, install xp to the desktop and then reinstall all the programs or you can try setting the laptop in "replace motherbd" and then clone that to the desktop. Please be aware that the 'replacement' mode does not always work and I'm not sure how you could use Acronis to do a clone just before the sytem reboots.

After the difficulties and disappointments experienced trying to make something work that inherently can not, (faulty information from "tech" sites), I've gone with the former strategy. Thank you for your suggestions.
