Hi all there,

I just bought portable 1TB wdc elements 1041 model# wdbpck0010bbk-01 hdd.

The first thing that i did coming home from the market was to benchmark its data transfers both read and write.

It is a usb 3.0 5Gb/s hdd with usb 2.0 support and with a usb 3.0 plugged in cable. My hp dv6 laptop is only usb 2.0 compatible. The data rates reported by the benchmarking software HDTune pro 2011 is READ RATE:- 34MB/s max, and 30MB/s AVG, AND WRITE RATE:- 17.5 MB/s MAX & AVG.

I doubt that these rates are very low as said on the sheet of 80MB/s read and write.

Is there any problem with it suggest any solutions please and early ??

waiting for your kind answers.

Regards & thanks

Hi, the high data rates reported on the sheet where achieved using a usb 3 port on a pc. But since your laptop only has usb 2 ports you won't get those speeds and will b limited to usb 2 speeds of about 36MB/s MAX for both read and write.

Except for your write rates being low for that particular benchamrk you ran (even for usb 2 standards), I don't think there is any problem. Unless your workload for that external disk absolutely requires usb 3 speeds, simply use it as is because there is no simple solution, otherwise you can look into usb 3 express card adapters for laptops.

Hi all there, hope all of u are fine.

I just ask a Q, where are these original WD hdds made in.

THe one I bought said as product of Malaysia

May be it is the reason that it is not the original US made, hence data rate is much lower, i.e., write rate is: 17 MB/s MAX & actual write rate is 8-10 MB/s. and when both reading and writing at the same time the rates are: 6-8 MB/s both read & write.

I bought it for about 76 us dollars. is it a good buy or a fake one. should i consider returning it and buying the other portable hdd of Toshiba, made originally in Germany?.

thanks & regards,

I would imagine that most of their products are made in Asia. Am currently studying in Malaysia and can guarantee you its not fake and the poor performance is definitely not related to it being made from Malaysia. I have two external WDs and a multitude of internal disk all manufactured from Malaysia and all performing exceptionally well.

Some older laptops are notorious for having uderperforming usb ports and I would suggest you test the disk on another pc, both usb 2 and 3 performance if you can. Your poor performance could also be related to software conflicts or even drivers.

WD has specific diagnostic software on their webpage for the different products. Use this to assess the health of the disk as some products arrive with defects.

If you do get the same poor performance on different PCs or the drive fails some of the diagnostics, then proceed with returning the drive or claiming RMA.
