Do I need RAID drivers?

I am installing a pair of Samsung Pro 512GB SSDs on an ASUS Rampage IV Extreme MOB. I read in the MOB guide that I need to use my USB floppy to get a copy of the RAID driver and then, during Windows install, install that RAID driver at the point during a fresh Windows installation when I get the opportunity to manually install drivers. I will be installing Win8 Pro - is manually installing that RAID driver necessary?

Mike

I don't know yet; I haven't done the install. My current rig uses a pair of SSDs in RAID 0 (a pair of X25M 256GB SATA II drives) and it made a huge difference performance-wise across my entire system, OS, and many apps. I use a 4 3TB barracudas in RAID 10 HDDs array as my permanent on board storage and backup array in an OCed i920 to 4.0GHz on an i100 cooler. I am building a new rig based on an 3930K - the old rig will remain in service. I use my main rig gostly for editing gigpixel CS6 (.PSB) images that take several minutes each just to open and minutes for even basic CS6 operation the images are so big (build from upto 100+ 36MP image arrays). I also am upgrading to 36GB of RAM from my present 24GB with room for up to 64GB or RAM if I need it. I also do occasional video editing and gaming - I'll be reusing an Sapphire Toxic 2GB 5850 OC card which is more than enough for those later tasks. I'll be OCing the 3930 to about 4.8GHz (assuming I get a good sample) on an H100i in a Storm Trooper case (present rig is built on an HAF932 case).

I just don't recall if when I installed Win 7 64 on my present rig if I manually installed the RAID driver for the pair of X25M's - its been a few years now.

Regards,
Mike
