Looking to set up a NAS in my apartment. I've never owned one, so I'd appreciate any help. Here's what I need:

-4 to 6 TB of storage
-Very quiet (since it'll be sitting next to my TV)
-Mac and Windows compatible
-I'd like to be able to access my content remotely, but that's not required
-I'll be storing movies and music on it

I'd like to spend less than $400 it (including the hard drives)

Thanks guys

Let me rephrase that. Can you build a computer? A custom built NAS would require you to order the separate parts and assemble them into a working computer. If not, you should probably just look around Newegg for a decently rated prebuilt set up.

Alright awesome, to save myself and you time, I'll direct you to the Tom's Hardware NAS/Home Theatre builds http://www.tomshardware.com/system-configuration-recommendation-56.html. Basically, just combine those builds together to get the price point you want. You shouldn't need anything high than a Pentium for the processor, and you should at least have a motherboard with Three SATA ports.

Also, while this is uneccesary, I would suggest getting a mini-ITX mobo and a mini-ITX case. This way you can save space. There are a plethora of mobos and cases, but for a motherboard, I would suggest: http://pcpartpicker.com/part/asrock-motherboard-b75mitx and for a case: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811112339

I should have been more specific, sorry. I already have a media PC hooked up to my home theater. I'm just looking for NAS with movies and music that I can either access from my media PC, Macbook, or iPhone.

Thats simple then, just add more storage to the Media PC, theres no reason to build a NAS

But I don't want to always have my desktop on. I want an NAS that can be on 24/7
