Intermittent Stuttering in Win7

Just recently (within the past few months) my system has been having this very odd stutter when in use. For example I can hear the sound in my headset click, or that my mouse momentarily skips a beat, keyboard inputs take a second to register (which is most visible while gaming). I can't put my finger on it. Temps on CPU/Mem/HDD are all fine, no noticeable errors are coming up in Event Viewer. I did just recently have a memory issue but the two bad sticks were replaced.

I re-installed and I'm still getting this issue. On a side note the stutter seems to become very apparent when playing the game 'Rift'.

System specs are as follows:

Core i7 3770k Ivy Bridge
ASRock 768 Extreme3 Gen3
G.Skill Ripjaws (16gb in 4 sticks)
ATI HD7970
1tb Samsung Spinpoint HDD
1000 watt power supply

If you have any idea or need any other info from me just holler. Thanks in advance.

I had similar, no end of mouse etc freezing for a few seconds at a time etc. Win7 reinstall made no difference, nothing in event logs, CPU usage minimum etc. Changed HDD for an SSD and never looked back, problem seemed to be HDD related. At least in my case, maybe yours too.

When I was having the memory issue (bad sticks) I reinstalled with the bad memory in, could that be causing a problem too?

Hi :)

Yes, it could , so hd test first then ram test...

All the best Brett :)

Alright so I ran a Seagate Tools for DOS test and it came back as PASS. So I suppose my next step is to reinstall Win7 with memory that I know works?

Unfortunately the long test crashed/froze half way through. I came back to the PC with green font with a black outline at the top. I could barely make out what it said and the timer for the long test froze. I'll run another one tonight and hope it sticks.

UPDATE: Same crash as before with the green font. I believe it might be the software itself. Brett do you have a suggested way I go about using a USB software to test?

I almost completely certain it is the hard drive. The stuttering only occurs when the hard drive is being written to. For example I'm playing Skyrim and installing WoW and the stuttering is ALL over the place.

With that in mind, what is a reliable SSD that wouldn't break the bank? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi :)

I am sure you are right...its drop hd in bin time...

Get something like a 128 gb OCZ Agility 4...not too much money...

All the best Brett :)

Looking into it. I really appreciate the help Brett. I'm sure I'll be back here again regarding SSDs because even 250gb isn't enough for all the games I play. So I imagine there is a way to write those games to a separate hard drive.

Anyway thanks again.
