current printer: HP office jet 6500A

Hello, I have had the same problem twice on 2 different windows operating systems with 2 different HP printers and I was hoping someone could help me out.

Both time were for my parents. One with was with XP the other Windows 7 now. They try to connect a HP printer with USB hoping it will get autodetected and windows will have the driver, it doesnt, they call me. Last did I did a work around by networking the printer but now they dont have or want a network. Borth are relatively new. So I googled the HP office jet 6500A and tried the two suggestions I found (right click, properties, run in vista mode and the other was a new usb cable....) but neither worked. They don't even use the scan or fax function I have no idea why they bought this. I guess they might use it as a copier..

I am pretty sure the reason it doesnt get detected during the software setup when it prompts me to "please connect USB bla bla" is because they have already connected it before. But the damage is done, I can't undo that. Does anyone know what to do?

Thanks a lot!
