You really need to RTFM!!

You need know exactly how these behave. Ideally you would set it up with 2 blank drives.. you tell the device you want RAID1 and it will set them up accordingly and you are done. If you have disks with data on.. you are taking a big risk.. they are probably formatted with a windows format? NTFS or something?.. and your device may not use that format.. so it will just wipe them when it sets up.

I have a Netgear Stora,, which is a similar device.. and if you look at the forums of how many people have lost data because they didn't read the manual... LOTS.

So you really need read the manual - which will tell you all you need know.
So unless someone who actually has one of these replies... don't trust anything they say.. and RTFM!!!

Cheers

raid 1 in a single external device is not a good idea imo. if the device fails then you lose both drives. No one's said the drives will be readable by anything else (yet) including installing the drives into your pc and being read by windows. You will need to make sure something other than the device will be able to read the drives outside of the enclosure before bothering with raid1 (imo)

That's true.. but the quick look at the guide does suggest it gets windows to do the formatting - so I guess they NTFS.
Unlike my Netgear Stora.. which uses some Linux format. But for me.. mine is just a backup.. (not an archive).. so although I have it in Raid1.. if I lose the whole device.. I still have the main machine.. so its not a big deal.
But just to be sure.. I take an extra copy (on a NTFS HDD) and put it with relatives.. in case the house burns down!!
Good point though.. def something to be aware of.
