CPU spikes, Nvidia drivers failing, desperate for help

I built a new PC about a week ago, and have been having problems constantly. The problem that happens the most is the computer begins to stutter, freezing for couple seconds, then unfrozen for a second, then freezing again, over and over until I force a restart. I've monitored the temps on everything, CPU is usually around 35-40, GPU is around 50-60 (Usually gaming when this happens). I tested the RAM with no errors, tested the HDD with no errors.

It seems to only happen when the GPU is under heavy load. I was told to run OCCT to test the GPU, and sure enough, it had thousands of errors, and during this, the CPU was spiking to 100, back down to normal, then back up to 100, so I canceled the test since I was afraid of damaging anything. When the CPU spikes like that, the computer is practically unusable. The mouse/keyboard are unresponsive until the CPU goes back down to normal.

The other error I get is the Nvidia driver has stopped responding and has recovered, as well as an nvlddmkm error with an event ID 14 in the event logs.

I'm at a loss, and I have no idea what to do at this point, since I don't know if my mobo is bad, the GPU, PSU, ect. So if anyone can help, that would be awesome so I can figure out what I should do.

Intel i5 3570k
Asus P8Z77V-PRO
Corsair Vengeance 8GB RAM
EVGA GTX680 Signature 2
Corsair HX850
Corsair H100i
WD Black 1TB

I had a similar problem once. Turned out it wasn't the driver, but the video card itself that was the problem. It was old and had just died, I guess. Anyway, that computer now runs on its Core 2 Duo's iGPU and works just fine.

Do you have integrated graphics capabilities? If so, try hooking up your monitor to the motherboard's iGPU ports and see if this continues to happen. If not, you probably have a defective video card. If it does, I have a few more things you can try. But try the integrated graphics option first.

I will try running on board graphics and see. And no, I purchased everything at once and installed it all, but the CPU temps are staying really cool.

Also, I'm noticing whenever I drag windows around on the desktop, the CPU is spiking, which then usually causes the Nvidia crash.

Go to the back of the case. The cord you're using to project to your monitor should be plugged into a port (VGA, DVI, HDMI, whatever it is) coming from a PCI slot. Unplug the cord from the port on the computer, and find a port behind the I/O shield that is compatible with the plug.

The issue might be that you have no driver for your onboard graphics. You should go to a different computer and download the right driver from the manufacturer of your mobo and then load that onto your computer.

Or if you still have your motherboard driver CD on hand, put that in the optical drive and install the video driver from there.

Thousands of Errors ? Explain.

You were running the GPU test and the CPU was spiking to 100C ? Something is very wrong.

Run the CPU test 1st....at least an hour. If that runs normally, then try the GPU test.

I was able to use the onboard graphics and I didn't notice any problems, no CPU spikes or anything. I did back into the BIOS and it looks like a ton of my settings I saved were either put back to default, or changed somehow. The memory timing was way off to. So far, no problems, but I guess I'll see.

In that case, yeah, it was probably your video card that was the problem. You should send it back to wherever you got it--give them a detailed description of what happened (if you can figure out a way to send them to error dump files as well, that's even better). Hopefully they'll refund or replace it.

If any of my suggestions were helpful to you, please pick me as the solution :D
