Hello, my sister's Acer is not very good at handling things that should be fairly easy. It shuts down during streams of Netflix and games of Minecraft and League of Legends. It runs at very high frames no problem, but for only about 10 or 15 minutes. Streaming Netflix in HD only lasts about an hour. I installed "CoreTemp" and never read that high of temperatures, only about 75 when shutting down. We used compressed air to blow out dust that builds up in the fan and it had only a placebo effect, I guess. The warranty is run up so we can't bring it to be fixed either. During the process of shutting down, it runs at 60 frames but then runs down to about 2 or 3 frames and then, poof, shuts down. Any ideas on what might be causing this to happen?

Maybe something other than the processor is overheating. You can try something like HWMonitor to check on all the temperatures. Also 75 seems a bit high, but I don't think that it should shut down.

I've downloaded HWMonitor and it doesn't show much information besides battery level and voltage. Still not sure what to be looking for.

I'm thinking that overheating is the problem. Also, netflix and minecraft certainly use the processor very hard. I believe that this laptop has a dedicated graphics card also. Those get hot. Try to keep it on a flat surface and keep space between the surface and the vents. The best approach is to probably take the laptop apart and clean the heat sinks and fans thoroughly. However I know that not everyone is comfortable doing that.

Well, who knows. Might take it apart and clean it. Probably the best thing to do. It might be overheating, not sure. But for a two year old laptop, I would expect better, yes?

Looking at other peoples acer laptops I would compare them to my old hp laptop. It had a heat build up problem after about 2 years of owning it. Cleaning the inside and application of new thermal paste would be best. A cooling bad for gaming wouldn't be a bad idea either.
