Hi Guys :)

I am in the midst of building a new rig for gaming only. I have decided on most of the parts, but it is just the CPU and motherboard that I am undecided about.

I have two choices:

The Intel option: i5 3570k with a MSI Z77A-G43, or
The AMD option: FX 8350 with an ASUS M5A99X EVO 990GX.

In the area that I live, the above options cost the same, and since some sites claim that the FX is better for gaming despite the i5's popularity, I am lost between the two options.

The rest of the build comprises of:

Corsair Vengeance RAM (4X4GB @ 1600Mhz)
Corsair H100i (in push/pull)
Corsair GS600
MSI TF HD7950
OCZ Agility 4 64GB SSD (Boot Drive)
Seagate Baracuda 1TB HDD (Data Drive)
NZXT Phantom
Fully spec'ed out with fans (I prioritize good airflow ;) )

Just to re-iterate, this will be for ONLY gaming, no CAD, no rendering, no video editing, none of that, just gaming at 1080p/60Hz. The main games that I play are FPS games, such as Call of Duty and Battlefield, though I do also play games like Assassins Creed and Tomb Raider.

I know that I skimped on the SSD, but it genuinely is not an issue for me since I hit the power-on button on my PC and then do some other stuff for 5 minutes before I come back to actually use my PC.

And lastly, I'm building this PC to last for a minimum of 3-5 years. I am aware that a HD7950 will not be anywhere near the higher end range of GPUs by then, but I have absolutely no problem playing games on medium (or sometines high) textures with filters set to low, or even off, just as long as the graphics are pleasing, and the frame-rate stays between 50-60 FPS.

I also plan on overclocking both the CPU and GPU, but nothing too extreme.

Please feel free to give any input, I'm no wizard in the tech world so I appreciate all input :)

You will get better performance for games from the 3570k Cpu, hands down. Generally you'll pay 50-70 dollars more for it though(figure 220 for 3570k, 120 for motherboard; vs. 180 for fx8350 and 90'ish to 110'ish for motherboard). I do have some questions though.

This is a gaming rig, you have 4x4gb's sticks of ram...drop down to 2x 4gb's. Gaming doesn't require more than that(and doesn't fully use it all either). If you turn on your pc, and walk away for 5 minutes...why bother with the SSD as a boot drive? Unless you meant that you are going to boot off the HDD, and install games on the SSD.

Are you buying from a local shop, or can you buy online? www.pcpartpicker.com is a good site to use for comparing prices between merchants, and you'll see a lot of posts on these forums that use it as the basis for builds. If you want the best advice, edit your message and include your budget for your parts if you are buying online. You'll get enough builds recommended to you so that you'll gain a better understanding of exactly what you want, and where you want the money to go, i.e. if you drop the SSD, and lower the Ram to 8gb's, you can probably afford a 7970 video card.

As someone who was a die hard AMD fan for over 10 years, in fact the last Intel PC I built was like 1997, a Celeron 300A running on an Abit BH6 at 450mhz. After probably a dozen AMD builds, my last one centered around a 965BE processor, I decided to go back to Intel and build the PC you see in my signature. Wow. AMD is for tight budgets and gives decent performance for the price, but the build I have now is just simply a powerhouse, nothing slows it down. Its going on 2 years old and still amazes me with just how fast and dependable it has been. If you have the money, go Intel. If your budget is very tight, AMD will get the job done.

Let me just simplify this for everyone ;)

If you have a extra 50-70 dollars buy a Intel, they are beasts. If you are on a tight budget just get the AMD CPU. Make sure that your MoBo is compatible with it first.
