Pc randomly crashes

So I wouldn't normally ask a question on a forum but this is the second time it's happened in 3 days so I found it a little odd.

To explain it, It's not just my PC freezes randomly, it's more then that. I was playing a game with a friend on steam when all of the sudden I heard a bunch of "scratch" sounds from my speakers, the game crashes. The steam UI was a multitude of random colours and just a complete mess of random shapes. Firefox crashed and couldn't be started up again. Team speak crashed and couldn't start up again. In fact I don't think I could run any .exe files without them crashing immediately.

I just wiped my hard drive and reinstalled win7 less then a week ago and the only programs I have on m PC at the moment are Steam plus whatever games I have, MSI after burner, and team speak. I'm not really sure what would cause something like that to happen. Unless it's just a random thing I can ignore.

Any thoughts?

No SSD, just a regular 500gb Hard drive. It's a few years old but it seems to be working rather well.

As for the hard drive test, do you mean chkdsk? Or did you mean something else? Because I know how to run chkdsk, I just don't know how to interpenetrate what comes up, or really what to do after.

Hi Jim :)
