How hard is over clocking? Buying a factory OC GPU?

Im looking to build my first gaming pc soon, and can't decide on the GPU. Im looking into the MSI GTX 670 PE OC. I was wondering, how difficult is it to over clock or is the factory OC already maxed out? Even if it is difficult I would probably still get it and mess around with it to figure it out.

For my 460s i downloaded Afterburner from MSI - http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm. Then I raised the core clock and memory speed in increments, testing each one.

Yes you can OC factory cards further.

a 670 is pretty fast already, esp if you are buying a factory oc'ed one.
it is easier to OC a cpu than a GPU, and is less risky ( i think) since cpu can overclock well (+1ghz is not uncommon, unlike a gpu)

i would suggest that you read more, and/or practice with a cheap gpu first. otherwise you might see artifacts :)

If your going with a factory OC model then the card already has a boost in performance and there is less room left to overclock further, you can go more but the difference between what you have with the OC and what you end up with is not worth it. You might be only adding 5 to 8 FPS when your finished. So if your wanting to experiment with overclocking to see how it's done and what you can do, your better off getting a stock model.

Factory OC's are typically quite conservative unless your paying top dollar. The OC version of my card for instance runs at (Core/Memory) 1050/1250 Mhz, I'm running it at 1150/1375 Mhz and I could push it further if I wanted.

Overclocking a GPU is harder than the CPU (unless your really pushing it) because you have multiple variables to deal with and temperature will always be an issue. However, its not too difficult to achieve a decent overclock.
Generally, you want to push the core clock more than the memory clock.
