3770k or 3820?

I want one of the two for a hardcore gaming computer and one that will hopefully last me for a few years, especially with more demanding games coming out, so future proofing for at least a couple of years. So please tell me which is better for my needs, the gpu ill be using with it will be the gtx 680.

I wouldn't go with the 680 - it's less powerful and more expensive than the 7970 GHz Edition.

In terms of gaming performance, there isn't much difference between a 3570K and a 3770K. I'd go for the i5. The X79 platform is also a lot more expensive, plus you can't OC the 3820.

Make sure you get a Z77 board so you can OC it and add a second GPU - I'd recommend something like the GA-Z77X-D3H or the ASRock Z77 Extreme4.

Thank you very much for the help. Is there much of a difference in actual performance between those two gpu's? I actually went from ati to nvidia cause of some problems and for physx.
I looked at the ASRock but i was also looking at the ASUS Maximus, is it just as good?

There's a differences between 3570k and 3770k in some games such as Crysis... 8350 can beat the 3570k which means the 3770k could beat 3570k easy...

Close your eyes, forget what everyone else says and go for 3770k+gtx 680.... if you are going to deal with multiple displays buy two of them.. and i mean gtx 680..coz I roamed internet for ages trying to decide which one to go for.. amd or nvidia..simple as that

I always work with 2 24inch displays so id say i will eventually sli.

What, because AMD's higher memory bandwidth is a bad thing to have on high-res displays, not to mention that a 7970GHz will usually beat a 680 no matter what (except in a couple of nVidia-optimized games eg BF3)? Plus they're cheaper.

FYI: The 4000-series chips will use LGA1150, a completely incompatible socket that will turn your new mobo into old junk. Either go for a 3770K now and accept that an upgrade will mean a new mobo (and the 3770K is powerful enough that it should last for quite a while before being too slow), or wait for a few months and get a Haswell board and CPU.

ASUS's ROG boards are, IMHO, thoroughly overpriced pieces of bling. At most they'll OC a few percent better than a board at half the price. I don't call that value for money.

So you still suggest getting the 3770k even though i need to get a new mobo in order to get it? I dont really wanna wait for haswell, and id say it wont be any better than the 3770k for gaming anyways. So ASRock, even though they seem to be very similiar price?

Youre right, but just having a bit more memory bandwidth doesnt mean it will do good in multiple display systems. Im not a Nvidia fanboy but if hes on a tight budget AMD seems ok though but eventually he needs two of those cards means either SLI/Crossfire and NVIdias got greater driver support and app support for SLI and physics. Performance and specs wise they might be same but we need to think about the real usage scenario, not just what others use. All depends upon your pocket and how much youre willing to throw and for what?..
and I agree what you said about 3770k.

I'd say get the 670 or 7970. NO POINT IN A 680!

Also, removing the IHS is not for the faint of heart. And is pretty firmly in the realm of the insane enthusiast.
