I am wanting to save/clone the entire drive of my old IDE 40 gb hard drive . If I have this hard drive plugged into an IDE to USB adapter and then plugged into my laptop USB connector can I simply clone it to another seperate hard drive or actually on my C drive ? What software do I need to do this ? I dont know if this changes anything , but the system already installed on my old IDE hard drive is LINUX.

Solution
If you wish to clone the IDE drive to the drive on your laptop I would strongly encourage you to create a separate partition on that drive. Otherwise you could overwrite the existing drive. You can use something from Acronis or EaseUS to clone the drive.

Hi , many thanks for your response on this . I am currently looking in to the ACRONIS solution and will hopefully follow up on this .

You may be interested in just imaging the drive. Look at the dd and dd_rescue manual. Once you image the drive you can install it onto a new drive or run it on a virtual machine such as VirtualBox OSE. I can't think of the full commands off the top of my head but that should get you started.
