A few months ago I built a new desktop PC and relegated my old machine to HTPC status. I was thinking about upgrading the GPU inside and wanted to get some opinions.
I mostly just want 100% smooth 1080p video playback, but I do think I'll play controller enabled games through it as I prefer the experience of sitting on a couch versus at my desk whenever I can.
So for those purposes would an HD7870 Tahiti (most likely Powercolor Myst edition) be overkill?
Also the machine sports an E8400 and EVGA 750i SLI FTW. Would that be a serious bottleneck for something like the HD7870?

Edit: I should probably mention I currently have a NVIDIA 9800 GTX+ as my GPU for this machine. It plays video okay, but I know it could be a lot better with a better GPU
