How to prevent dust from getting onto a computer that's on the floor with carpet around it?

My computer used to sit next to my desk (all carpet in this room), on top of a piece of cardboard. From me walking by it to get to the door, my feet would kick up all the dust, and the front fans would suck it in and basically create a noticeable layer on the front. So I moved it to the top of my desk and it's help with the dust immensely.

Only problem is it's basically killed my desk room and I really need the room it's taking up. So is there any way I can prevent dust while putting it back on the floor? I was thinking of maybe putting something in front of it as a dust shield or something since I think that was the main problem of it being on the floor. I still get about the same amount of dust in the back and side fan.

Thanks ahead.

You could try to place it on a piece of plywood, or perhaps make a stand for it to get it off the ground. Those steps should help.

It may be easier for you to invest in something like this: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811999226

Essentially, it's an easily attachable and cleanable filter. It'll stop a good portion of dust from going into your case.

Although counter intuitive, actually adding more intake fans can create a positive pressure inside the case. This will stop dust from entering through the small cracks and whatnot.

Vacuum your carpet regularly and have it raised as much as possible. I have mine on a platform 10cm off the ground, my last computer was on a 1cm thick piece of wood.

You could look at getting filters installed on your intake fans. Have positive pressure with fans blowing more into the case than the fans blowing out of the case.

Have a read through Tom's how to article on planning computer cooling, Part1 and Part2.
