hi, i was just wondering. ive got a 2 x 6870 crossfire setup. Are both graphics cards always in use, or do the both of them work together only in gaming. when gaming both the temps on both gpus rises but when im like surfing the internet the second gpu does not be in use, only when i game the second card gets used. iknow its a stupid question but is all this normal lol, jus want to know.

It will depend on which mode you use, but whatever you choose, there will always be activity and load on both of the cards, but maybe not at the same level.
The effects while gaming is much more noticeable, but even when you surf, the 2nd GPU is used, but at a very very low rate (~0.3%)
Crossfire is mostly separating the rendering load to 2 cards.

You can read more about crossfire rendering modes here :
http://www.ati.com/technology/crossfire/demos/en/rendering.html
and

Hope it helps!, :)

this is the second card when streaming. temps were 0 and usage was 0%

but when im gaming the temps are high on both cards and so is the usage. am i doing something wrong here or is this normal

Temps cannot be "0 degrees C"... It means that the card's offline. Then probably CCC knows to shut down the card #2 when not gaming, so it is normal, don't worry. :)

But I guess there is some kind of way to force the card to be always on, but you may not want that since it uses a lot of power.

ULPS is one of the power conservative options for Crossfire and it can be disabled at will if you so desire, which may or may not help in solving ingame crashes or sub-par performance in some cases. I'm not sure if this is the exact function that forces the 2nd GPU to turn itself off when it's not being used, but it does do something similar.

So either both cards don't need to be utilized at all times, or they cannot be utilized at all. Some games and applications simply do not have support for multi-GPU setups because they either have primitive/unsuitable coding or just don't require that sort of graphical horsepower to begin with.

It's normal. If you want the most out of your cards, you should get a 3rd party overclocking software such as MSI Afterburner and look up a tutorial online on how to overclock your cards past their base frequency. If you don't think you're not up to it or don't need a performance boost, you can use these programs to make yourself a fan profile that's a bit easier on the ears if you don't mind letting your cards run at higher temps.

Not a great idea to overclock and crossfire at the same time, stability and performance issues will occur.
Instead, try changing the rendering modes for crossfire to see which one's the fastest.

I've done that on 2 different Crossfire setups without any problems. Just overclock both cards separately until you find a common ground, then pull them down a little bit and hit up crossfire. As long as you've got a power supply that can handle the greater power draw, you're good to go.
