I need your advice on whether I should buy a new power supply or not.

Right now I currently have this which I purchased Feb 2009
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703005

Within the last 2 or so weeks I have had my computer randomly restart at random intervals. I ran memtest86 for 3 hours last night and everything was fine. Also ran Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes and found nothing. Took out my 9800 and used the HD4000 on the Intel Chip for graphics and still had the same problem.

This morning my computer was running fine for 2 hours or so than restarted and shut down 3 times within a few minutes and now is running fine again for the last 2 hours.

I was wondering if this could be related to the power supply and if so what would you guys recomend. The one I listed above is not modular and I would love to get a modular one as right now all my wires are clogging up my case.

If it helps this is my system
Windows 7
I5-3570k 3.4 ghz with Hyper 212 EVO, at stock atm
G Skill Sniper 8GB 240pin DDR3 SDRAM 1600
Crucial M4 128 GB SSD
Z77 Extreme4 MB
610W power supply listed above
Current Video card which I bought in 2008!!!! is:
EVGA 512-P3-N971-TR GeForce 9800 GT 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card (going to upgrade soon but using it for now)

Assuming your logs are saying "unexpected shutdown" basically like the power was pulled.

Typically this is a power supply issue.... BUT I have had cases of it being the mobo (less likely) but Ive still seen it happen.

Got a spare psu to test with?

I dont have a spare Power Supply Unfor. I have had this one for 4 years though and maybe it is just going out?

As far as the issue it doesnt give me a blue screen or an error. It will just shut off and then restart itself after a few seconds. In the event log it is a Kernel Power 41 error

But I figure its prob time to replace this one anyway and having modular would be nice. Anyone have any suggestions up to $100 for a power supply that is modular and reliable. I plan on getting a 7900 series or 660 and up Card when I do replace my video card

I had the same symptoms when mine was going out. I too first thought memory or motherboard. but after talking to 2 friends who work at Intel...they said that PSUs and SATA cables go out all the time.

unless you're going to run 2 videocards down the line I would stay around 700w. look for sales...Fry's sometimes has decent PSU's for around $100

I would contact PC Power and Cooling. That model has a 5 year warranty and you will likely be covered. They would probably send you a Silencer MK III and those are excellent units.
