What am I losing as I step down?
I want to run a HD 7970 and an i5-3570k with overclocking up to maybe 4.5GHz. I've never OC'd before and would like to try it out on a nice compact build.

Also, would this suffice for cooling: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

Your choice of CPU cooler is a good one. It should be OK for OCing.

Comparing the three mobos the ASRock Extreme 4 and ASUS Maximus V Gene are comparable but the limitations on the ASrock Z77M makes it another (lesser) class. The ASRock Z77 M has only two RAM slots and is limited to 16 GB. But if that is not a concern, all three mobos should be able to achieve an OC of 4.5 GHz. The ASUS and ASRock Extreme are better mobos, and I'd recommend the ASRock extreme for price and features.

Hey thanks for even replying to this post, I was just re-reading my title, that's really bad writing on my part. I am going with the extreme.

Thanks for your help.
