A friend had me look at a Dell Inspiron desktop that stopped working and everything I had seen and read (mostly on here) pointed to a faulty power supply.

The installed PSU is a Hipro HP-P3017F3 which appears to be a 300W PSU from google searches. Since I don't have a model number for the machine (my friend is not very technical) and I couldn't find it listed on the machine anywhere I am unsure if this is a mini-ATX or micro-ATX.

I'm hesitant to order a replacement PSU from Dell (I personally have opinions about Dell, which I won't get into here) so I am hoping to order a replacement on Newegg, but I'm not sure where to start.

My personal rig has a Corsair 650W, but that is overkill for this desktop. I found this one (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...) in this post (http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/363205-28-dell-comput...) but I am unsure whether it will fit in the case.

I don't deal with OEM products much, so any help here would be awesome.

You could replace it with just a simple Corsair CX430 Great improvment on a dell psu and gives him a little wiggle room if he wanted to add a graphics card. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E168...
From what i can find online, his old psu is standard ATX, so this would work fine.

The OEM HIPRO PSU is a standard ATX12V (a.k.a. PS2) form factor (i.e. 5.9"W x 3.4"H x 5.5"D) power supply unit.

The CORSAIR Builder Series CX430 that you've linked to should fit.
