Hi all,

I'm building a new PC for gaming, among other things, and I'm a little concerned about balance etc. Any comments or suggestions are welcome.

Components:

MSI Z77A-GD65 LGA 1155 Intel Z77 Motherboard
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130643&Tpk=MSI%20Z77A-GD65%20Z77&IsVirtualParent=1

Intel Core i7-3770K Ivy Bridge 3.5GHz (3.9GHz Turbo)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116501

1x GIGABYTE GV-N680OC-2GD GeForce GTX 680 2GB 256-bit GDDR5
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125422

1x Crucial Ballistix Tactical 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 Low Profile
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820148656

1x Intel 520 Series Cherryville 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal SSD
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167086

CORSAIR CX750M ATX12V v2.3 SLI Ready 80 PLUS Modular Power Supply
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139051

COOLER MASTER HAF XB ATX Desktop Computer Case
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119265

All that plus a Cooler Master heat sink, 3x 120mm fans, 2x 80mm fans, and 1x 200mm fan.

Note: I'm using the 750W power supply so that I won't have to replace it if I want to make upgrades in the future.

Thank You

J Danger

Well, an i7 is pointless for gaming, Intel SSDs are good but not worth their price. Look at Samsung 840s or other good brands. And the 7970 is a better card (unless you want physx and cuda gimics) and comes with crysis 3 and bioshock free.

I wouldn't get an a MSI board, but that's just me personally. Really like the haf xb. Only really interesting case they have. But you REALLY need to check your CPU cooler clearance

I don't see a HD. So I assume this is a gaming pc. If this is correct Upgrades is correct. Downgrade the cpu and with the savings get Gigabyte GA-Z77X-UP5 TH. That mobo has thunderbolt outputs so it's a little more future proof.

Yeah, I know that HT doesn't do much for gaming. I more or less just picked it since I'm pretty ADD and I tend to have a bunch of stuff open at once. I'm mulling it over.

I'm not 100% sure on the SSD. From the reviews I've read, it seems like the Intel SSDs are more reliable than their Samsung and Mushkin counterparts. If they actually are more reliable, then I don't mind paying a few bucks more. I really hate being inconvenienced. In almost all cases, I would rather pay more money than to be inconvenienced by RMAs.

What makes you say that the 7970 is better? The benchmarks say otherwise. Or are you saying that particular 7970 is better than the 680 that I linked?

Also, why do you dislike MSI motherboards? This motherboard is reviewed very well by Tom's Hardware.

Do you think Thunderbolt is really going to take off in the next few years? I'm not convinced that I would get a whole lot of use out of Thunderbolt outputs during the lifespan of this PC.

Hard to say but it easier to spending your money than my. If you don't want to upgrade mobo

Hard to say, but it's easier to spend you money than mine. If you downgrade to a i5 I would spend $30 to 40 more For a Cosair HX750 a better psu. I do own one. I agreed with you reasoning on the intel ssd.

i'll use

I had not considered that. I'll definitely get the HX750 instead. Thanks

Samsung and Mushkin are pretty much the gold standard of reliable SSDs. Intel may be platinum, but it costs performance and price. It's minor either way.
The i5 vs i7 means nothing for having "lots of stuff open". Games are more demanding and it doesn't help there.

The 7970 GHz matches or exceeds the 680, is cheaper, and has more memory/memory bandwidth. Plus $100 bucks of triple A games free. And a "normal" 7970 can hit GHz levels easy. At a lower price. If also take a 670 over a 680 since the improvement is minor.

The MSI thing as I said is personal... So not really valid. Nothing bad. Personal bias and i can admit that. But I think of MSI as primarily a gpu maker. And not in my "top tier" for that. If they aren't in my top tier for their main focus area, they really need to impress me for something else.
