We have 2 LG, flat screens. One is a 21'' LCD, the other a 50" Plasma. Our TV input is from Direct TV. The 21'' has the standard — not HD — set top box. The 50" plasma gets its signal from the Direct TV set top box.
When viewing HD programming on the 50" screen, the picture fills the entire screen in most cases. When viewing the same programming on the 21" — not HD — TV, the picture is in the same proportion as the HD version, but it doesn't even come close to filling the screen. Each side has nearly 2 inches of unused real estate, and more than and inch unused top and bottom. It just makes no sense to me, and I've tried using the TV menu to adjust the geometry, and also the setting menu on the Direct TV box to get an enlarge image. I can't find a setting that more effectively uses the dimensions of the smaller screen. Any ideas, or is this just a limitation of non-HD signal.
