I am building a computer and when I start it I get the error bootmgr is missing. Weird thing is that if I use that hard drive on my old computer it boots fine. When I tried to use os disk to restore my hard drive on the new computer, I can't because my keyboard won't work at that point and I can't press any key to continue. However, the keyboard works fine before so I can go into bios. Also i tried installing with a new hard drive but the new computer didnt regonize it after restarting. Not sure what to do next. Wondering if I need to update the bios or mobo is fried. Please help! Thanks.

Start by listing the brand and model of all the components in your system.

questions:
1) Is it the ONLY hard drive in the system?
2) Did you INSTALL Windows from scratch to the new system or just try to use the old hard drive with Windows already installed?

*Be aware, unless you have a full license, you'll need to buy a new Windows copy (i.e. Windows 8 64-bit OEM). Most licenses are OEM, single-use and are locked to one PC.

If you get really stuck:
1) WRITE ZEROS to the hard drive ( www.ultimatebootcd.com or other software)

2) Ensure BIOS is set to AHCI

3) Install Windows with only that hard drive attached

Thanks! I will try out all these steps and will get back to you tomorrow. Ill get another copy and see if that works. This is the only hard drive I'm currently using for this machine.

A fresh OS install is the only way you're going to be able to get it to work.

What OS version are you using?

During the initial setup make sure you delete any existing partitions on the hard disk drive and create a new one and then format it before allowing the Windows install to copy installation files to it.

That works fine, but in some cases WRITE ZEROS has solved some issues that this didn't fix though don't ask me why.

I recommend Start8 from Stardock. It can bypass the new interface completely and add back the Start Screen. I made a good effort to use the new interface and absolutely hate it. The main issue with the new interface is that few programs support it yet. Unless a program supports it, when you click a link it just opens in the regular Desktop which is nearly identical to W7 but no Start Screen (and options that appear when your cursor is in any corner).

After a week of that nightmare I shelled out $5 for Start8:

If you use Start8 make sure to read through all the settings such as the "Desktop" options to DISABLE the charms bar etc from the desktop.

*You can still use the new interface by clicking START-> "Windows 8 Menu" and everything within the new Start Menu works normally.

Windows 8 sign-in password:

FYI, when I installed Windows 8 I added a password (not sure I had a choice even). I don't like them at home so I attempted to remove it. Now, when I do a COLD BOOT there's no password but I get one coming out of STANDBY.

*Does anybody know how to remove the STANDBY password as well for Windows 8?
(Don't mean to hijack your thread but I thought you might wish to know this as well.)
