If you open Wordpad first then ask the program to open(file - > open) then find the file, does it open ok?

Open office has way more features then WordPad, but is not as fast to open.

I blanked out your e-mail because spammers will get it and send you tons of junk.

When it asks you what to use, Select Browse and tell it to use ""%ProgramFiles%\Windows NT\Accessories\wordpad.exe"" without the ""s

Try this:

1) Open Wordpad
2) Create a simple file and save as RTF format.
3) Close Wordpad
4) Double-click the file you created (if it asks for the program then tell it to always use WORDPAD).

Now attempt to open the other "rtf" file. If it doesn't recognize the format then it doesn't sound like it's actually an RTF file. If the file loads and is corrupted you may see scrambled text.

*You can also change the settings in Windows Explorer to show the file extension to see if it really is an RTF file.

Did you try the solution from photonboy, It should fix you up.

Try start and search "file extension"

You should get and option "Change the file type associated with a file extension". Select it and you should get something like this.

If you type .rt(f was not needed) you should jump to the .rtf extension(or scroll down to it), what does it show as the current default

As per my above reply, open Wordpad, type something then "save as" an RTF file. After that, open the file with Wordpad (file->open). If that works then Wordpad can read RTF files just fine.

Now try to open the "RTF" file you need to open the same way. If it won't open then it's either really corrupted or it's not even an RTF file.

Reinstalling Openoffice is pointless. If it can't open the file, it's a problem with the file not OpenOffice.

Do you mind explaining WHY you're trying to open this file? If it's just some random file you never created then I feel like this is wasting people's time.
