Hi,
Can someone please advise. I need to set up my computer at work but not sure how to go about it. What I need is to connect a headset which will be used for skype and set to record from software mp3 recorder. Also I will need to set up for a call recorder which is connected to normal landline phone which connects to pc via the front connections at the minute as the rears don't seem to work. Would a soundcard work for connecting two inputs and one output. Could anyone recommend a very cheap soundcard that would work for this please as I really don't know anything about soundcards.
Thanks
Mark

Basically we currently have the usual landline number which we record the calls on. But we are wanting to use skype as well to allow the usual trade customers to call and leave their orders on the recorder through skype. The recorder for skype records directly from skype itself. But the landline one uses the 3.5mm. Obviously we'd need a headset for skype though, so in and out for that? Would using the mic on the front for the Landline recording and then just a cheap soundcard with an in for the Headset work?

I missed that your back ports aren't working, and I'm extremely surprised that your phone runs on a 3.5mm jack.

If all you're looking for is something to add more ports with, I'd go with something like this:

When Skype does it's "answerphone" recording, it doesn't use the headset at all. The datastream to skype is recorded. It will use the mic from the headset to record if you are doing incall recording. Again it just records the datastream, which doesn't depend on the source of that data.

Essentially, yes it would work. The call recorder for the Landline can use the Line In/Mic In on a soundcard, and a Headset for Skype (USB would be best) can be used independantly for Skype. If your headset is using 3.5mm Line In/Mic In then it may get confusing, but it could still work provided 1. they aren't being used at the same time, 2. the Headset and Landline are on different ports (i.e. Line In is different to Mic In).

The most likely scenario I can guess is either call recording for reference purposes, or answerphone services. Both of which will work provided you have the appropriate software. The Landline will be more difficult as this will usually require the use of a PABX with Call Queue Management software which can perform call recording/answerphone services, but then again you may have a handy electrical engineer and friendly software developer that can hook up some kind of signalling mechanism to answer the landline when it rings, play a message and record the open line, and then signal when the Land line is terminated, or you could use prebuilt solutions. You used to be able to do this with the old dial up modem, but these days it can be done with a USB to Phone Adapter (e.g. Parliant PhoneValet) and software like IVM Answering Machine (which a plugin to Skype could drive this directly so you only have the one recording application).
