x970's will only crossfire with x970's and x950's. Same with X850's. They are only compatibl with x870's and x850's.

^No.

Evergreen cards are released before AMD change the name scheme. A 5970 is 5870 X2, so yes it can be CF with a 5850.

i think it can be done because 5970 and 5850 is based on the same core. fundamentally it is the same to what people do with 6990+6970 which are proven to be working (hardocp once use such setup and they pit it against 3 GTX580 in the past). did you already have 5850 with you or not? if not you might want to ditch the idea if you intend to make your game to perform much better.

I knew there was once a chipset called Hydra 100/200 from Lucid Logix, and I think you can do it for this type of graphics card you mentioned. If you can find a mother board (e.g MSI BigBang or Asus Crosshair 4 extreme), it would work though. Not sure if Lucid has the latest board, but if you would just like to have fun, then I guess this is the way to go.

However, using a board that is not Hydra supported, you can't do it, or well it is also depending on the mother board you are using... Some sites they have called it TriFire;

Hope you could get some ideas there...
