I currently bought the computer with 8gb ram, 2 x 4gb, can i just add 2 more 4gb sticks to get to the 16gb i want? Is there any drawbacks to having 4 sticks of ram vs 2? Or do i need to just purchase 2 8gb sticks of ram? thanks in advance!

it dose not really matter as long as all the sticks are in the same color I.E. your 2x4 GB in white and the next set in black. if you have a x64 bit machine you could even use 2x 8 GB modules and get even more ram. as long as the mother board can handle it.

Hi:hello:

Yes, you can do that ( add 2 x 4GB to the existing). Drawbacks? Yes, there is. If you install 4 modules then in the future if you need a memory upgrade (which is highly unlikely and it is an overkill to get 32GB) you will have to ditch the 4GB modules to make room for the new memory. In addition to that, 4 x 4GB setup runs causing extra stress to the memory controller while the 2 x 8GB setup doesn't break a sweat and moreover it does have the free RAM slots for future upgrade.

You might wanna try this for compatible memory http://www.memorystock.com/memory/DellXPS8500.html or you can try Kingston. I wouldn't suggest any advanced rams like Corsair Vengeance. You can go with any value ram. Cheers!!
