Hi - I have tried many of the various suggestions on this site and others to "cure" my printer problem - I get the error message "spooler subsystem
app stopped working and was closed".

I want to know if I reinstall my Vista operating system (overwriting everything) if this will cure my problem. I have few files and I can easily save all of them before reinstalling.

Thank you, Dan

You can uninstall and re-install your print drivers with the latest from the printer manufacturer's web site. But this is probably only a temporary solution as I always had printer problems with Windows Vista (as I do again with Windows 8).

If you're willing to start from scratch... If you upgrade to Windows 7 home premium 64-bit, you'll get rid of Vista issues and printer issues for good.

Your best bet is to reinstall your operating system... but you could open a command prompt as an administrator and run "sfc /scannow"

If you decide to reinstall, make sure that you back up all of your files, verify that you have all of your license files (Office, Windows, any 3rd party applications) and then proceed to format then reinstall your OS.

I completely agree that going to 7 is worth it but it will cost you some $$$.

Short answer - Yes, as long as you don't then re-install the printer that is causing the problems

This is usually caused by a problem with the printer drivers - if the various suggestions have not covered this then open print management (type "print management" into search) In Custom Filters>All Printers delete your printer and then in Custom Filters>All Drivers delete all the drivers that relate to this printer.

Thank you everyone for the help. I have uninstalled and reinstalled recently downloaded drivers, tired the original disk with the driver, etc. etc. - always failed to do anything. I think I have done just about everything suggested over a period of a few weeks. Actually I am helping a neighbor; I have Windows 7. She has the Vista. Both Vista and her printer have worked together fine for 4 or 5 years. It is interesting though, to read in your replies this is a Vista issue and it has resurfaced in Windows 8. thanks dan.

You probably could fix the problem without reinstalling the system if applied to these steps:
1. Scan your system for malware like spoolsv.exe, spoolsu.exe, spoolsv0.exe, spoolso.exe or sp00lsv.exe.
2. Performing net stop spooler command
3. Removal of the .shd and .spl files from system Spool and printer's Temp folders
4. Removal of the registry keys with printer’s job queue
5. Restart the service with net start spooler command
