Backup fails even though my external drive is virtually empty

I have a newish ASUS laptop running Win8, and an external WD 2 TB drive that has only the files on it that were there when I bought it. My system has maybe 200 GB of data. Even so, when I try to run the Windows backup, it fails and says there isn't enough space on the drive. Should I (1) try to get Windows backup to run, and if so, any suggestions about HOW to do that welcome or (2) give up on Windows backup and run some other backup program, such as the one provided with the drive? Ratings for the WD product are not exactly enthusiastic.
