Hi guys,

I've never overclocked a CPU before so thought, before I go blowing something I'd give you guys a heads up.

The motherboard I'm using is "Asus Z77 Sabertooth Intel Z77 (Socket 1155) DDR3 Motherboard"

The specific processor is "Intel Core i7-2600 3.40GHz (Sandybridge) Socket LGA1155 Processor"

I've read in some posts that people are getting around 3.8ghz after OC

What settings do I need to change in the BIOS?

I've currently got the stock heatsink/fan and will be upgrading prior to OC which is advisable yes?

Much Appreciated
Curtis

Like DarkSable said, your processor is not a 'K' branded piece. That means that it has a locked multiplier. You can increase its speed a little, but increase the FSB, but that should always be done w/ caution (effects memory rate, ect.).

As with any overclocking, you never want to have the stock cooler on the card. The stock part is a bear minimum of cooling performance, and should never be trusted when pushing your parts

. The terms used by Intel is a bit strange so some people may not be able to grasp the concept immediately. The limited unlocked SKUs will allow the user to overclock the CPU 4 "bins" above the maximum turbo frequency. "bin" should really be multiplier here because that's basically what it allows you to do: bump the multiplier by up to 4 above what turbo would give you normally.

Take the i5 2400 for example. The 2400 has a base frequency of 3100MHz and a maximum turbo frequency of 3400MHz (single active core). This processor will allow the user to overclock to 3800MHz via turbo (math is easy here because the base clock is always 100MHz)
