I'm not sure if I would SLI again - one option get another GTX 470 and a bigger psu if your present one won't handle 2 470s. If I had $400 to spend I would go for the GTX 670.

I would say yes...and I'm in the same boat as you...get a 670 or a 7970

Yes I would say might as well upgrade now, but if you are happy playing lowered settings for decent fps then just wait it out. It's all in what settings you want to play

I play 1440p, get anywhere from 45-60 FPS

What settings is that? Medium?

if your getting that many fps at 1440p then you must not be playing bf3/crysis3/skryim etc.

entry level 1440p for the listed games would require a 7950/670 or up for decent framerates.

if i were you i would wait, the 470 is still a good card but if your trying to game at that res with the popular heavy hitting titles theres no way a 470 will hold up with above medium settings at best.

Not with the settings turned down.

But if you're talking about what should OP consider, the 7950/670 are probably minimum options to consider for an upgrade at that resolution.

To be honest I don't think that the gtx 670 would be a good choice because it only has 2gb of VRAM so at his resolution that 2gb will get eaten up real fast. I would say go for 7950 or 7970 because of the increased VRAM that will be needed if not right now, in future games

Yes but they are expensive, at least where I live

oh...they're only about $20 difference between the 2gb and 4gb cards here. although the 2gb cards are about 5-10% faster than the 4gb cards...the 4gb are really made for sli setups

Yeah there is no performance difference apart from the fact they can handle higher resolutions

Nope. By the time you find a game/setting/resolution that causes a performance hit due to vram capacity at the 2GB mark, the 670 (and even 670 SLI) is out of power and you need to turn settings down, making the vram issue meaningless.

Now 670 SLI is borderline enough that there may be merit to buying a pair of 4GB cards instead of 2GB ones, but there has been zero practical benefit shown to a 4GB 670/680 over the 2GB counterpart, up to and including 7680*4800 resolution.

Ok master BigMack, you win :p  btw where has OP gone, they haven't posted in a while lol

is the OP only interested in buying an nvidia card? if so the 670 is indeed his best option.but if he is willing to consider amd then i would suggest either 7950 or 7970 3gb.

my bad...I passed on bad info...doing my own research and not relying on word of mouth I found that yeah, you do not take a performance hit from the 2gb cards to the 4gb cards.

skyrim ultra modded is really the only game i know for a fact that framerates dropping through the floor with <2gb vram and the eventual crash to desktop... many users over on nexus are having issues with 2gb 670/680s when wanting to max out mods. the 3gb vram on the 7900's or the 4gb versions of the 600s is the way to go for skyrim when using many texture/meshes mods plus enb's.
