Your only limitation would be the stock dell power (300 watts according to dell) supply not giving enough juice to run a high end GPU. Granted you have the standard sized tower and not the slim version, swapping in a higher powered aftermarket power supply should be no problem. How much were you planning on investing into this project ?

I put a DX 520WPS power supply in it when i did the graphics card sorry forgot to add that and i was thinking maybe 500 to 700 less money is always better though of course.

thank you mjmacka but as listed i have upgraded the power supply and willing to upgrade more. I dont know if the PCIe slot is on the motherboard or what but willing to upgrade that as well if within budget. Hence forth my asking on what i can upgrade not to what i am limited to as of now thank you though for your input. Much help needed here

Upgrade your graphics card.

The only major thing limitation your graphics is your graphics card, your current card: ATI Radeon HD 4550 is a good low-end graphics card, but not for gaming or video editing.
Newer graphics cards PCIe 16x 2.0/ PCIe 16x 3.0 cards are compatible with older systems but you will not get optimal performance.

For good graphics performance expect to spend $200. I am a light gamer... Dota2 and I don't game at ultra settings so I got a cheaper card.

P.S. look at your post time and my post time earlier. It took me more than 3 minutes to type my message so I missed your reply to cmi86 saying that you upgraded your power supply. That power supply will provide enough juice for your PC with a better graphics card. Also, as an ex Geeksquad employee I strongly recommend avoiding Dynex items. They are a Best Buy proprietary brand and the quality is somewhat lacking.

Honestly man If you are looking to spend 500-700 on this project why don't you just put together a new gaming rig? You can get a nice quad/hex core. 8GB ram, 7850/650Ti Boost for that kind of money. Something much better served to gaming than your current system.

Yes, you could build a monster AMD rig with that kind of budget...intel you could still build a nice system, but you'd have to sacrifice somewhere to keep it at the same money.

His current PC has an I3. Odds are good that he could upgrade it to a nice I5, add some more ram, a better graphics card and he would be set to go... oh and swap out that Dynex power supply. That should be swapped even if he doesn't plan on upgrading.

Just want to add so you know.
The Intel Core i5 760 (2.8GHz/8MB cache) and Intel Core i5 750, 45nm, 95w, processor (8MB Cache, 2.66GHz) are supported by the Inspiron 580. Nothing above this officially at least.

Prior to installing the processor, check that you have BIOS version A06, or higher installed, when Enhance CPU support was added.
