My hd crashed so now I have a new Seagate 1tb and newly installed Win 7 home ed. 32bit. I want to add two partions to the drive but after defragging the drive it still leaves files in the middle and at the end. Then when I use disk manager to shrink the volume to make the partions it tells me there is only 360 available to partition. But I only have 23 gb loaded on the hd. I need a program that will move all files to the the front 100gb section so I can partition the rest. I used Perfect Disk defrag and it gave me a list of system excluded files that it did not move. Im not very knowledgeable when it comes to computers so I have to train myself as I go. Any help would be great. Thanks.

Solution
You can try the free home version of Partition Master.

http://www.partition-tool.com/download.htm

This kind of software can do the job on the next boot and move the files BEFORE windows loads. This takes all the work out of it for you.

Failing that, You may have had the page file in the way. That can be disabled then re enabled after. Partition master is just more easy.

Thanks for the link. I downloaded the free version. Any idea what I do first? Do I run the defrag and then see if it moves the MFT stuff? Thanks, Jack

You should be able to just shrink(resize/move partition) the partition.

Just shrink it to the size you want.

do NOT touch the system reserved partition or any other hidden partitions. Also, do not move the Windows partition around as that may result in issues booting.

Your unallocated space before should stay at 0 and the unallocated space after will increase as you shrink the partition(you can use the down arrow or the little ball to shrink the partition. You can even type the final size into the box if you want.)
