I have a 9800M GTS on a P-7801u. Something has been wrong with the 3d card for a long time, and I had long given up trying to repair it. I'm trying to find a way to get it just stable enough for something minimal, like playing video or - even better - setting up the machine with Plex.
If I use generic drivers in Windows 7, the machine is very stable. If I use Nvidia drivers in Ubuntu, the machine is very stable. If I use Nvidia drivers in Windows 7, the machine gets BSODs all the time, especially when playing a video or running a game.
Any suggestions on what to do? I would love to find a way to use a minimal driver set or configuration that just barely allowed me to play video, for example.
